José Marcelo Salas Melinao (born December 24, 1974 in Temuco ) is a former Chilean football player .

Career

The center forward Salas, nicknamed El Matador , came from Chile to the traditional Argentinian club River Plate Buenos Aires at the age of 22 and developed into one of the most dangerous attackers. In 1997 he won the Supercopa Sudamericana with River Plate . The final first leg against São Paulo ended 0-0, the second leg 2-1, with Salas scoring both goals for his team. In the same year he was named South America's Footballer of the Year and Argentina's Footballer of the Year .

In addition, thanks to his goals , the Chilean national football team qualified for the 1998 World Cup in France . After the tournament, in which his team was able to advance to the round of 16 and Salas scored four goals, he moved to Lazio .

With Lazio he was Italian champion and cup winner in 2000 . He also won the 1999 European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup , scoring the only goal of the game in defeating Manchester United .

In 2001 he moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . With Juve he won the Scudetto twice , but his time in Turin was marked by injuries and so he did not even complete half of the possible competitive games for Juventus in two seasons and only scored a handful of goals.

After five years in Italy, he moved back to Argentina to join River Plate. From the 2005/06 season he played again for CF Universidad de Chile and was captain of the Chilean national team, which tried unsuccessfully to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . On November 28, 2008, the record scorer of the Chilean selection ended his career at the age of 33.
