Matías Ariel Fernández Fernández (born May 15, 1986 in Buenos Aires ) is a Chilean football player who is currently under contract with Club Necaxa .

Career

society

Matías Fernández began his career at the age of 12 in the youth team of Colo Colo de Santiago . There he went through the youth teams in the following years before moving up to the club's professional squad. The midfielder played his first championship game on August 1, 2004 against CF Universidad de Chile . A week later he scored his first goal for Colo-Colo. He scored a total of eight goals in the Clausura 2004 and was named the best young player of the season.

In 2006 he won his first title with Colo-Colo, the Apertura, and then the Clausura. In the Copa Sudamericana , Matigol scored nine goals in six games and was able to reach the final with Colo-Colo, which they lost to the Mexican representative CF Pachuca . Because of these achievements, he was named South America's Footballer of the Year in 2006. In the winter of 2006/07, the offensive player moved to Spain for Villarreal , which was headed by the Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini . Fernández was voted "America's Footballer of the Year" 2006 ahead of players like the Argentinian young star Fernando Gago . On January 7, 2007, he made his debut for Villarreal against league rivals Valencia . Although he could never quite match the performances from his time in Chile, Fernández was a regular.

In 2007/08 he led the team to the best league result in the club's history when the team was runner-up. After the offensive Chilean got less and less attention from new coach Ernesto Valverde in the new season , he decided to move. For the 2009/10 season, Matías Fernández therefore joined the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon . There he received a four-year contract. Right away he made the leap into the starting XI of the Leões .

In 2012 Fernández moved to Fiorentina in Italy . He was part of the permanent staff of Fiorentina for four seasons before moving to AC Milan on loan in the summer of 2016 . After returning to Florence, he moved to the Mexican club Club Necaxa in the summer of 2017 .

For 2019 he was awarded to the Colombian first division club Atlético Junior .

After his return he was sold directly to his youth club Colo Colo for free.

National team

Fernández represented Chile in various youth national teams. He was also the Chilean team captain at the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Netherlands. Together with players like Nicolas Canales , Carlos Villanueva and José Pedro Fuenzalida , who would later also become a national team player, he formed the framework of the junior team.

In Chile's last qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup against Peru on August 17, 2005, Fernández was substituted on for Luis Jiménez and made his debut in the senior national team of his home country. The following year he was appointed to the squad for the 2007 Copa America by then national coach Nelson Acosta . In the following years he was a regular player and qualified with the team for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, for which he was appointed to the Chilean squad in May 2010 .

Matías Fernández was born in Caballito , a district of Buenos Aires , to an Argentine mother and a Chilean father. He has two brothers, Ezequiel and Nazareno. When Matías was four years old, the family moved to La Calera .
