Carlos Villanueva (born February 5, 1986 in La Serena ) is a Chilean football player .

Player career

National

Carlos Villanueva started his career as a professional footballer in his hometown at Deportes La Serna. In 2004, at the age of 18, he moved to the top Chilean team Audax Italiano , where he quickly became a regular and top performer within the team.

A sale of Villanueva to the Spanish second division Real Sociedad in summer 2008 was actually a done deal. However, as the Spaniards got into financial difficulties, the obligation had to be removed. Finally Villanueva was loaned to the English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers for a year . In summer 2009 he finally moved to Al Shabab in the United Arab Emirates. There he stayed, he spent six seasons and completed over 100 league games. For the 2016/17 season he moved to Ittihad FC in Saudi Arabia .

International

Carlos Villanueva has scored one goal in eight international matches for the Chilean national soccer team. After his debut in the friendly against Venezuela on February 8, 2007, he was part of the team for about a year and was also used in the Copa America 2007 before he was no longer considered. On October 9, 2010, he celebrated his comeback in the friendly against the United Arab Emirates .
