Gary Alexis Medel Soto (born August 3, 1987 in Santiago ) is a Chilean football player .

Career

Gary Medel comes from the youth of CD Universidad Católica , where he made his professional debut in 2005. He scored his first two goals two years later on July 28, 2007 against local rivals CF Universidad de Chile in the Clásico Universitario . He sealed the victory with his two goals and shot himself into the hearts of the fans.

In 2008 he was voted Footballer of the Year in Chile , ahead of Lucas Barrios . Because of this, but also because of his good performances, he was able to get hold of a regular place in the Chilean national team.

On July 20, 2009, his club reached an agreement with the traditional Argentinian club Boca Juniors on a loan from Medel. Only three days later it was officially presented to the Juniors . On March 25, 2010, he scored both goals in a 2-0 win over rival CA River Plate , but was also sent off in this game.

In the winter of 2010 he moved to the Spanish club Sevilla FC . In the summer of 2013 he was transferred to the Premier League team Cardiff City for the club's record fee of 11 million pounds .

After Cardiff's relegation to the Football League Championship , Medel moved to Serie A at Inter Milan in August 2014 for around eight million euros , where he signed a four-year deal.

After three years at Inter Milan , he moved to the Süper Lig to Beşiktaş Istanbul for 2 and a half million euros . There he made his debut on August 18, 2017 in a 2-2 draw against Kasımpaşa Istanbul .

In summer 2019 he returned to Serie A for FC Bologna . The Italians paid around 2 million euros for him.

Medel took part in 2007 with the Chilean U-20 selection at the U-20 South American Championship in Paraguay and reached fourth place with his team, which qualified for participation in the U-20 World Cup in Canada . There he played with players like Arturo Vidal , Alexis Sánchez and Mauricio Isla . After the two 3-0 wins in the group stage against hosts Canada and Congo, they reached the round of 16 with a 0-0 win against Austria. There the team was able to eliminate the favorites Portugal 1-0 and won against Nigeria 4-0 in the next round after extra time. In the semifinals, the team failed 3-0 to Argentina after Medel was sent off the field in the 15th minute of the game. In the 1-0 win in the game for third place against Austria, he was suspended. During the U-20 World Cup, he played six games, but remained without a goal.

Difficulties on and off the pitch

So far, numerous incidents have hampered Medel's career. So Medel received several bans so far, z. B. for gross fouls, a fight with a teammate or spitting at an opponent.
