The 2015 Copa América was the 44th game of the South American continental football championship and took place in Chile for the seventh time after 1920 , 1926 , 1941 , 1945 , 1955 and 1991 . As with all Copas since 1993 , Mexico, which took part for the ninth time, and Jamaica with its first participation, took part in addition to the ten members of CONMEBOL, two visiting teams. Host Chile won the tournament for the first time in the final in Santiago against Argentina on penalties. Defending champions Uruguay failed in the quarterfinals. The top scorer together were Peruvian Paolo Guerrero and Chilean Eduardo Vargas , each with four goals. According to media reports, Lionel Messi was earmarked for the Best Player Award, but the award was not given to any player. No official reason was given for this.

Chile is eligible to compete in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. If one of the two visiting teams - Mexico or Jamaica - had won the tournament, the most successful South American national team would have qualified for the Confederations Cup 2017 instead of the tournament winner.

Choice of venue

At a meeting on April 28, 2011, the South American football association CONMEBOL chose Brazil as the venue. Due to a new rotation regulation, Brazil was planned as the 2015 venue. Due to hosting the Confederations Cup in 2013 , the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics , Brazil did not want to host the tournament. Nicolás Leoz , President of CONMEBOL, brought up Mexico , although not a member of CONMEBOL, as the venue. Meanwhile, Brazil and Chile were discussing a swap, Chile should host 2015, Brazil 2019. Bolivia was also discussed as a venue by its President Evo Morales . After Brazil had been confirmed as the organizer for the time being, the presidents of the national football associations of Brazil and Chile announced on March 24, 2012 that they would exchange their event rights for 2015 and 2019 respectively. The Copa América 2015 should now take place in Chile, the 2019 tournament in Brazil.

mode

The game was played in a combination of a group phase and a subsequent knockout round . The group stage was played in three groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group and the two best third-placed teams reached the quarter-finals. In the event of a tie, the goal difference decided. In the final round there was a direct penalty shoot-out after 90 minutes , except in the final, where extra time followed.

Squad

Each national association had to nominate a final squad of 23 players by June 1, 2015.

The FIFA regulations require clubs to present their players to the national teams 15 days before the start of a tournament. However, the final of the UEFA Champions League , which took place on June 6, 2015, posed a problem for the South American players from Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona . Due to a special regulation between UEFA and CONMEBOL, the players Arturo Vidal , Roberto Pereyra and Carlos Tévez (Juventus Turin) as well as Lionel Messi , Javier Mascherano , Dani Alves , Neymar and Claudio Bravo (FC Barcelona) join their national team just a few days before the start of the tournament.

The Uruguayan player Luis Suárez was suspended for the entire tournament. In the last group match of the 2014 World Cup against Italy, he bit his opponent Giorgio Chiellini in the shoulder in a duel and had been banned from FIFA for nine competitive matches as a repeat offender - he had previously received two bans for biting.

Mexico, which also took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 in July , registered different players for the Copa than for the Gold Cup. National coach Miguel Herrera emphasized that Mexico was the only country that could take part in two continental championships and win.

    Logo, mascot and cue ball

The agency Brandia Central created the logo of the Copa América 2015. The logo shows a soccer ball with a five-pointed and an eight-pointed star. The five-pointed star is a symbol of the Chilean national flag , the eight-pointed star is an old national symbol and also represents the eight Chilean host cities. Furthermore, it shows four stylized people who are supposed to reflect the values of Chilean culture: The fan stands for “celebrating”, the heart stands for “passion”, the two opposing players symbolize “devotion” and the overhead kick - the one in the Spanish "chilena" means - represents the "triumph".

The official mascot of the Copa América 2015 is called "Zincha" and represents an Andean jackal ( Lycalopex culpaeus ) with accents of the Chilean national colors red, white and blue. The Andes jackal has its habitat in the Andes u. a. in Chile. The name "Zincha", which is a fusion of "zorro" (fox) and "hincha" (fan), was chosen in a public internet vote from three suggestions: 47.1 percent of the participants decided on this name, "Andi" (27.2 percent) and “Kul” (25.7 percent) came in second and third.

"Cachaña" is the official name of the 2015 Copa América match ball distributed by Nike and was presented on November 16, 2014 in the Estadio Nacional de Chile by Arturo Vidal . The name "Cachaña" is a Chilean term used when soccer players show feinting, faking and dribbling on the field.

The properties and structure of the game ball was based on the Ordem II of Nike, which also for the Copa Libertadores , Premier League , La Liga and Serie A is used. The design and colors of the game ball are heavily influenced by Chilean culture. The national colors of Chile white, blue and red - as well as the color yellow as a symbol for the raw material copper , the most important economic sector in Chile - have been incorporated into the design.

    Television broadcast

The Copa América 2015 was not seen on television in German-speaking countries. The broadcaster Sport1 , traded as a potential candidate , did not secure any rights for the South American championship. All Copa America games were originally intended to be broadcast live on YouTube and Xbox Live, but this plan was not implemented.

    Others

In April 2015, CONMEBOL, the Argentine Football Association, the broadcaster Tele Red Imagen and the educational program Scholas Occurrentes founded by the Catholic Church agreed that US $ 10,000 should be donated to the latter for every goal scored during the tournament. Immediately before the start of the tournament, the Vatican suspended this agreement until the corruption allegations against several football officials were cleared up.
