The Estadio El Teniente is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Chilean city of Rancagua , which is around 86 kilometers south of the capital Santiago de Chile . The local football club Club Deportivo O'Higgins has played its home games at the sports facility since it was founded in 1955. The complex is located on Avenida Capitán Ramón Freire , in the middle of a residential area.
history
The construction of the stadium goes back to the American company Braden Copper Company . After construction began on June 1, 1945, the Estadio Braden Copper Company with wooden stands was inaugurated in 1947. In 1960, the stadium unexpectedly became the venue for the 1962 World Cup . After the severe earthquake in Valdivia in 1960 , only stadiums were selected that could be repaired without government assistance. The Braden Copper Company offered to use their stadium and CLP 200 million was invested in the venue.
With only 10,000 seats on the wooden stands, the Estadio Braden Copper Company was still one of the smallest and most Spartan stadiums in which a football World Cup was held. A total of seven games of the tournament were played in Rancagua, including a quarter-final game. In 1967, the Chilean government acquired 51 percent of the shares in the Braden Copper Company and four years later the company became wholly state-owned. Therefore the venue carries since 1971 the name El Teniente , after the largest underground - copper mine in the world. It belongs to the state company Codelco .
For a long time the stadium remained almost unchanged. In 1995 a fire destroyed the wooden north curve. It was replaced by a concrete tier. It was not until 2008 that there were plans to completely renovate the home of Club Deportivo O'Higgins with the wooden stands. However, the project did not get beyond the planning stage. Four years later, a new concept was presented that was also implemented with a view to the Copa América 2015 .
Construction began in February 2013. The plan was to convert the old facility into a stadium in accordance with FIFA guidelines . Three concrete stands were erected to replace the outdated wooden stands and create an almost closed stand ring. The tiers are fully seated and offer 14,087 seats. The main and the opposite stands were given a roof. The new floodlight system with 16 small masts, each with ten spotlights and 2,000 lux illuminance , was mounted on this. It enables television broadcasts in HD quality. The playing field made of natural grass was equipped with an irrigation and drainage system. Under the roof on the upper tier of the main stand are the VIP rooms with a balcony for 750 visitors. The athletics facility was given a blue plastic track .
Overall, the stadium was laid out in the club colors of the home team, sky blue and white . A video wall was located on the edge of the grandstand on the south curve . In the stadium building, among other things, changing rooms, facilities for journalists, medical treatment rooms, a doping test room as well as a club and a copper museum were set up. Total work was for 9.9 million dollars carried out. The El Teniente meets international standards in all criteria, except for details in the area of comfort and will be one of nine stadiums of the Copa América 2015.
On April 8, 2014, Club Deportivo O'Higgins celebrated the reopening of the facility. Staying in the game of the Copa Libertadores was Argentine team Lanus . On the sixth and last group match day of the 2nd round, the teams parted in front of 10,651 spectators with a 0-0 draw. O'Higgins needed a win to go through and was eliminated.
At the Copa América 2015, the two games Colombia against Venezuela on June 14th and Mexico against Ecuador on June 19th will be played in Rancagua.
