Marcelo Díaz , full name Marcelo Alfonso Díaz Rojas (born December 30, 1986 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean football player . The midfielder has been under contract with the Argentine club Racing Club Avellaneda since 2018 . He is active for the Chilean national team .

Díaz became known in German-speaking countries through his engagements at FC Basel and Hamburger SV . At HSV, he secured a place in the club's history with his free kick goal in stoppage time in the 2015 relegation .

Career

Universidad de Chile

Díaz started his career in 1997 as a junior at Universidad de Chile and received a professional contract in 2004. From 2004 to 2012 he scored ten goals in 205 league appearances. In 2010 he was loaned to Deportes La Serena for a year , for which he scored five goals in 13 games.

His greatest success was in 2011 when he won the Copa Sudamericana with Universidad de Chile. In the same year he won both semi-annual championships and was voted into the team of the best eleven players of 2011 in the Chilean first division.

FC Basel

In June 2012, FC Basel signed Díaz; the move to Europe was also based on the recommendation of the then coach of the Chilean national team, Claudio Borghi . He was used for the first time at FC Basel on July 17, 2012 in the first leg of the second Champions League qualifying round. At the end of the 2012/13 season , Díaz became Swiss champions with FC Basel and was in the final of the Swiss Cup , which they lost on penalties . In the UEFA Europa League 2012/13 he was eliminated with FC Basel in the semifinals against the then current Champions League winner FC Chelsea .

The season 2013/14 ended FC Basel as a champion and reached the finals of the Swiss Cup , which was lost after extra time. The Champions League season ended for the team after the group stage, but in the Europa League they made it to the quarter-finals. Díaz had a total of 39 appearances under coach Murat Yakin and scored six goals (three in the championship, one in the cup and two in the Champions League).

FC Basel became champions again in the 2014/15 season under new coach Paulo Sousa . Díaz was used a total of 24 times in all competitions, but often found himself on the bench and left FC Basel in the winter transfer period. At the beginning of February 2015 he received approval from FCB.

Hamburger SV

On February 2, 2015 Díaz moved to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2017. Two days later he made his Bundesliga debut when he came on for Petr Jiráček in the 59th minute of the 3-0 away win against SC Paderborn 07 . Díaz scored his only goal for HSV in the second leg of the relegation away against Karlsruher SC when he converted a free kick to 1: 1 in stoppage time; in extra time, HSV won the game 2-1 and held the class. Rafael van der Vaart was actually a regular free-kick taker for HSV at the time. However, Díaz spontaneously took over the execution and his reasoning on the field opposite van der Vaart - "Tomorrow, my friend." (Meaning: "Next time, my friend.") - became a popular quote among supporters of the HSV.

"He certainly scored one of the most important goals ever in the club's history for our HSV ..."

- Dietmar Beiersdorfer , Chairman of the Board of HSV, after Díaz's move to Celta Vigo

In the first half of the 2015/16 season , Díaz started four times in eleven league appearances.

Celta Vigo

On January 15, 2016 Díaz moved to the Spanish Primera División for Celta Vigo . He received a contract dated June 30, 2019, although he was severely injured with a torn muscle tendon in his left thigh in December 2015. On February 7, 2016, he made his debut for Celta Vigo on matchday 23 in a 1-1 draw against FC Sevilla . In his first six months, Díaz made 14 appearances and qualified with his club as sixth for the Europa League . In the new season he came to eight appearances in the Copa del Rey and five appearances in the Europa League. On April 16, 2017, the defensive midfielder scored his first goal for Celta Vigo in a 3-0 win on matchday 32 in the away game against Granada CF. In the league, he came to a total of 26 missions and took 13th place in the table with his club. In August 2017, his contract with Celta Vigo was terminated.

UNAM Pumas

A short time later he signed a contract with UNAM Pumas . There he stayed for a season.

Racing Club

In 2018, Díaz joined the Argentine first division  racing club . With the club from Avellaneda he became Argentine champion in April 2019.
