The Estadio La Portada is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Chilean city of La Serena , the capital of the Región de Coquimbo . The football club Deportes La Serena has played its home games here since it was founded in 1955. After the renovation from 2013 to 2015, it can accommodate 18,500 visitors. At the end of January 2015, the work on the shell was 98 percent complete.

history

The Estadio La Portada was built in 1952 and opened on August 26th of that year. For the Copa América 2015 in June / July and the U-17 World Cup 2015 in October / November of that year, the old system was completely rebuilt and adapted to the specifications of FIFA and the South American association CONMEBOL . The city of La Serena with the Estadio La Portada was selected for the two tournaments by the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Chile (ANFP) in December 2012. The demolition of the ailing venue began in March 2013. The company COPASA SA from Spain was awarded the contract for the construction . On April 19, 2013, the foundation stone for the new stadium was laid in the presence of the then President Sebastián Piñera .

14,651,007,000 CLP (around 20.5 million euros ) were made available for the new construction . In addition to the city of La Serena, the Regional Council Consejo Regional de Coquimbo and the Instituto Nacional de Deportes (IND) contribute to the costs. With CLP 6.792 billion, the regional council provides the largest share of the sum approved by the council after a special meeting in July 2012.

The grandstands are two-story all around and are fully equipped with seats. Around 5,000 seats are to be created for visitors on the lower tier. Around 13,000 places are provided for the upper tier, which is laid out in individual blocks. At the end of January 2015, the upper tier was almost completely equipped with plastic seats in various shades of red . In contrast to the old stadium, the new building is being given a roof that primarily spans the main and opposite stands.

In the VIP - boxes 360 places are provided. An eight-lane athletics facility will remain in the new stadium and will meet the requirements of the IAAF world association . The playing field made of natural grass was equipped with an irrigation and drainage system. A total of six changing rooms will be set up for the athletes (two for the professionals and four for the amateurs). Commentators have two TV and eleven radio stations for radio and television broadcasts. The press conference room will have an area of 87 square meters. In addition, La Portada will receive the equipment required for international games such as a floodlight system suitable for HD television transmissions with at least 1,500 lux illuminance , a video surveillance system , a doping test room, medical treatment rooms and a warm-up zone for the athletes in the stadium. The floodlight system was tested for the first time at the end of January in the presence of Mayor Roberto Jacob and some regional councilors. The last major works up to completion include the interior fittings , the seating in the tiers and the relocation of the new athletics facility.

More than two years after the demolition, the newly built venue was reopened with a game on May 13, 2015 between Deportes La Serena and the Argentinian club CA San Martín . The opening game ended with a 2-1 victory for the visiting team.

The Estadio La Portada is one of three stadiums for the 2018 South American Women's Football Championship .
