Gonzalo Nicolás Martínez (* 13. June 1993 in Guaymallén , Mendoza ), best known by his nickname Pity , is an Argentine footballer who since January 2019 in the US MLS - Franchise Atlanta United under contract. The winger joined Argentina in September 2018 .

Club career

CA Huracan

Martínez began playing football at Club Atlético Huracán . He made his league debut for the first team on September 10, 2011 in a game against Club Almirante Brown . During his time at Huracán, he won the 2014 Copa Argentina with the team and in the same season, after four years of abstinence, reached promotion to the top Argentine division .

River Plate

In January 2015, Pity Martínez moved to the top club River Plate , who paid a transfer fee of around 4 million euros for the midfielder. On February 6, 2015, he made his debut in the 1-0 first leg win in the Recopa Sudamericana 2015 against CA San Lorenzo . He was also used in the 1-0 win in the second leg and won his first title in only his second appearance for River. He made his league debut for his new team on February 16, 2015, when he made a successful debut with two assists. He scored his first goal a month later in a 3-3 draw against Arsenal de Sarandí . In his first season in 2015, he was able to establish himself in the starting line-up and contributed to an extremely successful season for his team with five goals and eight assists in 43 appearances. With the Millonarios , he also won the Copa Libertadores 2015 and the Copa Suruga Bank 2015 in addition to the Recopa . In the following year, winning the Recopa Sudamericana and also won the Copa Argentina.

In the 2016/17 season he contributed with 12 scorer points to reaching second place in the table behind arch-rivals Boca Juniors . They also successfully defended the Copa Argentina title. At the Copa Libertadores 2018 in the next season, he promoted River Plate in the second leg at Grêmio Porto Alegre with a goal assist and a converted penalty in stoppage time in the final, where the hated arch-rival Boca Juniors was waiting. Atlanta United

On January 24, 2019 Martinez moved for a fee in the amount of 13.2 million euros for US MLS - Franchise Atlanta United . He made his debut on March 4 (1st matchday) in the 0-2 away defeat against DC United . On the 11th matchday he met for the first time for his new club in a 1-0 home win against Orlando City . In the league, Pity was used in 32 games, in which he scored five goals and assisted nine more goals. In the final of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2019 on August 27, he scored a goal in a 2-1 win over Minnesota United .

On September 8, 2018, Martínez made his debut in a 3-0 win in the friendly against Guatemala for the Argentine national team . In this game he was on the field from the start and scored the interim 1-0 lead in the 27th minute of the game with a penalty.
