Bradley Edwin "Brad" Guzan (* 9. September 1984 in Evergreen Park , Illinois ) is an American football - goalkeeper and national team of Polish descent.

Player career

youth

Guzan played for the University of South Carolina college team at Columbia for two years . He also played for the Chicago Fire reserve team in the USL Premier Development League .

CD Chivas USA

In 2004 he gave up college and signed a contract with Major League Soccer and was drafted by CD Chivas USA in 2005 . He was henceforth one of the few on the team who did not have a Hispanic background. In his first year he was the club's regular goalkeeper. At the end of the 2007 season, he was named Goalkeeper of the Year.

Aston Villa

On July 11, 2008, the English first division club Aston Villa agreed with the MLS and the CD Chivas USA club about a transfer of Guzans. The move was perfect on August 1st, 2008 after the UK home office granted the necessary work permit.

Guzan made his first game for Aston Villa in September 2008. He stood between the posts in the League Cup game against Queens Park Rangers. He made his international debut on November 6, 2008 against Slavia Prague . On March 22, 2009 he stood for the first time in a Premier League game after regular goalkeeper and compatriot Brad Friedel got a red card in the game.

At the turn of the year 2010/11 Aston Villa loaned him to the second division Hull City . There he completed 16 league games by the end of the season before returning to Aston Villa. There he represented the injured Shay Given on December 3, 2011 against Manchester United (0-1) and in the following month he remained the "number 1" for the time being. At the end of 2011/12 , Guzan initially did not receive a new contract, but in the course of further planning his contract was finally extended. During the seasons 2012/13 (36 league appearances) and 2013/14 (38 league appearances) he was the regular goalkeeper of his club. In July 2013 he signed a new four-year contract.

National team

Brad Guzan played for the US U-18 national team. In 2008 Guzan took part in the US Olympic selection as one of the three allowed over-23-year-olds in the Olympic soccer tournament in China and was on the field in all three games. The US Olympic selection dropped out of the tournament in the preliminary round.

On February 19, 2006, he played against Guatemala for the first time for the United States national team . At the Confed Cup 2009 Guzan was used in the group game against Egypt . With the national team he reached the final of the competition. He was also on the US squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , but was not used.

Since 2015, Guzan has been a regular goalkeeper for the US national team. He played in all six games during the Gold Cup 2015 and was also nominated for the USA squad during the Copa América Centenario 2016 by coach Jürgen Klinsmann .
