The team last played in the country's first division in 2004 . After the club protested against his relegation in the same year, he was banned from participating in all national and international club competitions.

history

Deportivo Wanka is a merger of two associations, Club Ovacion Miraflores was founded in Chimbote in 1969, later the association was renamed to Ovacion SIPESA. They played in the regional premier league and were sponsored by the SIPESA fisheries union. In 1992 they were promoted to the first Peruvian league, in 1993 they took part in the Copa CONMEBOL. In 1996, the sponsor withdrew from Ovacion and the club was called Deportivo Pesquero. In 2000, Deportivo Pesquero and Deportivo Wanka merged, the latter name becoming the new club name.

In 2004 the club got into controversy when they moved to Cerro de Pasco , the highest city in the world and the highest venue for a professional football club at 4,380 m above sea level, an altitude at which one could get sick from altitude . Opponents criticized this move on the grounds that the club wanted to avoid relegation because many visiting teams could get a problem with the lack of oxygen there with the difficult weather conditions including hail and temperatures close to freezing, but above all due to the high altitude. Even with this step, Deportivo Wanka could not prevent relegation.
