The Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto , or Mineirão for short , is located in the Pampulha district of the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte , the capital of the state of Minas Gerais . After the renovation in 2012, it has a capacity of 62,160 spectators. It is named after the former governor and co-initiator of the 1964 military coup, José de Magalhães Pinto (1909–1996).

history

The Mineirão is the home of the Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte and Atlético Mineiro clubs, and América Mineiro also uses the stadium for major events . The Brazilian national soccer team has already used the stadium for home games.

The state-owned Mineirão stadium, located in the northern district of Pampulha , was designed by the architects Eduardo Mendes Guimarães Júnior and Caspar Garreto. From the start of construction in 1963 to the opening in 1965, around 5,000 people were involved in the construction of the stadium. For the inauguration on September 5, 1965 a state selection played against the Argentine top club River Plate . The player Buglê from Atlético Mineiro scored the goal for the 1-0 victory in front of 73,201 spectators.

On December 21, 1976, FC Bayern Munich played 0-0 in front of 117,000 spectators against the hosts Cruzeiro, thus securing their first victory in the World Cup , after having scored 2-0 four weeks earlier at the Munich Olympic Stadium .

The attendance record of 132,834 - 56,618 women and children had free access - was set up on June 22, 1997 in the final second leg of the state championship of Minas Gerais between Cruzeiro and Villa Nova AC , with Cruzeiro 1-0 being enough for the title. Since then, the capacity has had to be reduced for safety reasons.

On July 8, 2014, the semi-final game of the World Cup , later called Mineiraço , took place in the stadium , in which future world champions Germany defeated the Brazilian team 7-1. The game result is the highest victory in a World Cup semi-final to date.

The stadium is also occasionally used for cultural events.

Conversion for the 2014 World Cup

On May 31, 2009, the world football association FIFA announced the twelve venues planned for the 2014 World Cup . The venue was completely modernized for the World Cup tournament. After the necessary renovation (draft: gmp ), which cost around 250 million euros and was completed in December 2012 after the start in mid-2010, the stadium has a capacity of 62,160 spectators. The World Cup venue was reopened on December 21, 2012. The arena's equipment includes, for example, 90 VIP boxes, a restaurant with a view of the playing field and the press stand, 106 electronic turnstile systems , two video display boards with an area of 98 square meters each and a video surveillance system with 350 cameras . The Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto is the second completed stadium for the 2014 World Cup.

The first game in the renovated Mineirão took place on February 3, 2013 between the home teams Cruzeiro and Atlético. A friendly match between the national teams of Brazil and France was played on June 9, 2013 , before the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup was played in mid-June . The Belo Horizonte stadium was also the venue for the 2016 Summer Olympics football tournament .

owner

The state of Minas Gerais owns the stadium . He sold the rights of use to the Minas Arena company until 2037. The company has the option to extend the contract until 2045.
