Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas is a lagoon in the Lagoa district in the Sul zone (South Zone) of Rio de Janeiro .

geography

The lagoon is fed by smaller tributaries from the nearby hills. In addition, the lagoon is connected to the Atlantic by a canal , so the lagoon is filled with brackish water.

The lagoon has an area of ​​approximately 2.4 km² and there are two islands:

  • Ilha Poraquê on the north-western bank.
  • Ilha Caiçaras on the south bank near the outflow to the Atlantic.

history

The lagoon is named after a Portuguese military man who, through marriage, came into the possession of a large estate in the vicinity of the lagoon at the beginning of the 18th century. The estate extended, among other things, over the current districts of Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana , Ipanema , Leblon and Humaitá .

The lagoon is used as a competition site for rowing and canoeing. There is also an infrastructure with an Albano system , modern launch system and target tower. In the finish area of ​​the regatta course on the south bank, temporary grandstands with seating for up to 14,000 can be set up as a so-called Lagoa stadium .

As part of the 2016 Summer Olympics , rowing and canoeing competitions were held in the lagoon . The rowing and canoeing competitions of the Paralympics 2016 also took place in the lagoon. To this end, the facilities that were built for the 2007 Pan American Games were expanded and expanded. In addition, other rowing competitions were held in the lagoon, such as the 2015 World Junior Championships .
