The Parque Aquático Maria Lenk ( German Water Park Maria Lenk ) is a sports pool in the Barra da Tijuca district of the Brazilian metropolis of Rio de Janeiro . The sports facility, which opened in 2007, has 6,500 seats and is named after the Brazilian swimmer Maria Lenk , who died in April 2007 at the age of 92.
The swimming pool has an area of 42,000 m² and is located in the Complexo Esportivo Cidade dos Esportes , which also includes the Arena Olímpica do Rio , the Velódromo Municipal do Rio cycling track and the former motor racing track Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet . It was built for the 2007 Pan American Games . There, the competitions were swimming , Diving and Synchronized Swimming held.
The swimming pool and diving pool are flanked by two roofed, air-conditioned stands. The diving tower has five platforms. The 50-meter pool with ten lanes is 25 meters wide and three meters deep. The diving pool measures 30 × 25 meters, with a depth of up to five meters. On March 17, 2008, the Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro (COB) signed a contract with the city of Rio de Janeiro for the use of Parque Aquático Maria Lenk . The contract has a term of 20 years. The COB is u. a. responsible for administration and bears the costs of maintenance.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics , the diving and water polo competitions were held in Parque Aquático . The bathroom received special attention when the water turned green from the effects of algae during the games .
