History and successes

Ambassador Raul Paranhos do Rio Branco , son of Baron Rio Branco , was invited to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1913 . As a result, the desire arose in Brazil to become part of the Olympic family. On June 8, 1914, a number of influential sports officials at the headquarters of the Brazilian Rowing Association Federação Brasileira founded the Sociedades de Remo in Rio de Janeiro, the first National Olympic Committee in Brazil, under the name Comitê Olímpico Nacional (CON), which later received its current name. At the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp , Belgium , an official Brazilian Olympic team took part for the first time, where they won one gold and two silver medals.

In 1935 the COB was recognized by the IOC. Since then, Brazil has sent athletes to all summer games . They won a total of 108 medals for the country, including 23 gold medals. Most of the Brazilian medals after individual sports were won by the Brazilian judoka with 19 awards, while Brazil achieved the most gold medals in sailing , with six Olympic victories. (As of 2014)

Since the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , France , Brazil has also participated in all winter games. There it is still aiming for its first medal victory. (As of 2014)

In 2004 the COB was one of the founding members of ACOLOP. Since then, Brazilian athletes have taken part in all Jogos da Lusofonia , the games organized by ACOLOP for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries . At the Jogos da Lusofonia 2006 and again at the Jogos da Lusofonia 2009 , the Brazilian team won the most medals of all participating teams.
