The Arena da Amazônia is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of Manaus , Amazonas state . The stadium offers 44,310 seats and was the venue for four matches of the 2014 World Cup .

history

The arena was designed in 2009 by the German architecture firm gmp in a joint venture with the engineering firm Schlaich Bergermann und Partner . The Estádio Vivaldo Lima (known as Vivaldão ), which was completed in 1970 and was demolished for the new construction, was located at its location until 2011 .

The stadium is still criticized for its questionable sustainability. There were initially no plans for using it after the 2014 World Cup , as the World Cup venue in Manaus does not have a top-class soccer team. There was only minimal investment in the city's other infrastructure (such as in a new airport ) up to the 2014 World Cup , and many projects had to be postponed due to lack of time. Protests during the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup resulted in demonstrations against the stadium in Manaus. The venue was also criticized by the coaches of the participating World Cup teams, such as Ottmar Hitzfeld , as the tropical climate required extreme physical exertion from the players.

Up until the beginning of February 2014, four workers died during construction work on the arena, which is why workers stopped working. As a result, the completion could not be kept by mid-February.

After almost four years of construction, the opening was celebrated on March 9, 2014. A cup game between two regional teams was watched by around 20,000 visitors, as only the lower grandstand ring was open to spectators. The construction costs totaled R $ 669.5 million (around EUR 206 million).
