The Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel is a football stadium in the Dutch city of Rotterdam . The football club Sparta Rotterdam plays its home games here.
history
The stadium was built in 1916 in Spangen, a working-class district in the Delfshaven district , as the Spangen Stadium according to plans by architects JH de Roos and WF Overeijnder. Over the years it has been renovated and expanded in small steps to a capacity of 30,000 almost exclusively standing room. After it fell victim to a hurricane and was almost completely destroyed, it was completely demolished in 1998 and rebuilt according to the plans of the Zwarts & Jansma architects . Only a small building and the lawn, which was rotated by 90 °, remained.
The newly built stadium was renamed Eneco Stadium , Sparta's main sponsor at the time. However, this renaming was soon changed to Het Kasteel ( The Castle or The Castle ). The stadium has had this nickname since its opening due to a small, five-tower building at the Het Kasteel stadium, which is why this building was the only one to exist after the renovation between 1998 and 1999. Today the building houses the Sparta Rotterdam Museum.
Today, Het Kasteel has 11,026 seats and is also the oldest football stadium in the Netherlands.
