De Grolsch Veste ( German Die Grolsch -Festung ) is a football stadium in the Dutch city of Enschede , Overijssel province . The owner is FC Twente Enschede . From 1998 to 2008 it was called "Arke Stadium". It is close to the University of Twente . The stadium is fully equipped with seats and seats 30,205 spectators. Furthermore, underfloor heating is installed. On October 1, 2006, two video billboards were installed .
history
The arena replaces the “ Diekman Stadium ”, where Twente played from 1956 to 1998. Consideration was given to renovating and expanding the old stadium. Due to the growing fan base and the unfavorable location, the decision was made to build a new building. The foundation stone was laid on January 31, 1997. The new venue cost 33 million guilders and took 14 months to build. Due to the high costs, the stadium was constructed in such a way that it could be expanded gradually if necessary. The first game took place on May 10, 1998 between Twente Enschede and PSV Eindhoven . The Eredivisie game won Twente 3: 0th In May 2008 it was announced that the stadium would be renamed “De Grolsch Veste”. The name rights were acquired by the Grolsch brewery , which is located in the municipality of Enschede. The name "Veste" (German: fortress ) goes back to the small town of Groenlo . This is where the brewery was originally located.
expansion
In 2006, plans were developed to expand the stadium from 13,250 to 24,000 seats. The expansion of the main, back gate and curve grandstands from single-tier to two-tier grandstands began in January 2008 and was completed in time for the start of the 2008/09 season .
The next expansion phase began in February 2011, increasing the capacity to 30,205 spectators. This expansion stage was inaugurated on October 29, 2011 against PSV Eindhoven . Considerations are going towards expanding the stadium to 44,000 seats and adapting all grandstands to the current status of the main and rear grandstands, which is a prerequisite for the staging of a Europa League final.
Construction disaster
On July 7, 2011, a grandstand roof of the stadium collapsed during the construction phase. Two construction workers were killed and 14 others injured. On August 18, 2011, the Dutch investigative commission for security announced the cause of the accident in an interim report. The roofing had already started before the roof racks were properly attached. However, a design flaw was not found.
