The De Oude Meerdijk (until the end of 2017 Jens Vesting ) is a football stadium in the Dutch municipality of Emmen in the province of Drenthe . It is the home ground of the soccer club FC Emmen . In January 2018 the stadium was renamed De Oude Meerdijk .
history
The stadium was built in an industrial area on the outskirts of the city of Emmen and opened on August 27, 1977 with the game FC Emmen against VV Emmen Germanicus (3: 1) in front of 6,500 spectators. At that time it was still called Meerdijk Stadium and had 12,000 seats. It got its name from the Dutch insurance company Univé. For a relegation game to the first division against SC Heerenveen in 1990, 12,000 spectators came to the sports facility. In 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2001 the sports facility was renovated. Today the four covered grandstands offer 8,600 seats for spectators.
The last modernization in 2001 was carried out for the junior soccer world championship in 2005 . For the tournament, the system was adapted to the requirements of the world association FIFA and completely renovated. The fences on the grandstands were also removed and a new floodlight system with 120 spotlights and an illuminance of 1,400 lux was installed. Eight World Cup games took place in Emmen.
On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Univé company, two concerts took place in the Univé Stadium on September 7th and 8th, 2007. To the two concerts with u. a. Frans Bauer and Marco Borsato 17,000 spectators came to the stadium. On May 7th, 2008 an international soccer match for women took place in Emmen. The teams of the Netherlands and China met and drew 1: 1.
