Julio Walter Montero Castillo (born April 25, 1944 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .
Club career
The 1.81-meter-tall defensive midfielder , nicknamed El Mudo , who was also used as a defender , began his career in 1964 with Liverpool Montevideo . Two years later he moved to the Uruguayan top club Nacional Montevideo , to which he returned at the end of his career (1975-1978) after stints abroad at the Argentinian club Independiente (1973), as well as with the Spanish representative FC Granada (1973-1975). The time at Nacional , for which he completed a total of 459 games, was the most successful of his career as a club player.
He and his team were able to win a total of six national championship titles in these years (1966, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1977). After he failed in the final with his teammates in 1967 and 1969 , he succeeded in winning the Copa Libertadores in the third final in 1971 and then in the final of the World Cup . A year later, the Copa Interamericana was also added to his club's trophy cabinet. In his career, he can look back on 68 appearances in the Copa Libertadores , in which he scored five goals.
National team
Montero Castillo was active in 43 international matches for his home country. He hit the opposing goal once.
He took part in the two world championships in 1970 and 1974. In his first World Cup tournament, he reached fourth place with Uruguay. In the second participation, however, there was no success. In fact, Montero Castillo was one of the first players at a soccer World Cup to receive the red card recently introduced by FIFA in its regulations . But he was able to book a title win with the national team by winning the South American Championship in 1967 .
His son Paolo Montero was also a successful soccer player.
