Career

Club career

Ancheta began playing soccer in the San Lorenzo team in Florida, which his brothers founded. In his home department he was soon a member of the youth selection. Depending on the sources, his path led him to Nacional, one of the two major clubs that dominate Uruguayan football, in 1965 or 1966, through the mediation of Toto Carratú . There he started in the 5th División (Quinta) and went through the other teams Nacionals in the following years. The tall, headed right-back, whose style of play is described as unusual and whose passes were often used to initiate the Bolsos attacking game , then played in the Primera División for Nacional Montevideo until 1971 . While he was a member of this club, he won the Uruguayan championship in 1969, 1970 and 1971 and, after losing in the final in 1969, finally won the Copa Libertadores in 1971 . Further career stations were then Grêmio Porto Alegre (1971–1980) in Brazil and the Colombian club CD Los Millonarios (1981). During his stay in Brazil, he was awarded the Bola de Ouro in 1973 . In addition, in the period of his association with Gremio in 1977 and 1979, he won the state championship of Rio Grande do Sul for his employer. In Brazil, he was honored to have his footprints immortalized on the club's own calzada de la fama , a kind of Walk of Fame. At the end of his career, he returned to Nacional Montevideo in 1982. Across stations, he scored three hits for Nacional in 134 official missions.

National team

The 1.85 meter tall defender played several games with the Uruguayan national team as part of the qualifying round for the 1970 World Cup and, after qualifying for the tournament by selecting his home country, was also part of the Uruguayan squad in Mexico. There he came to six appearances in the course of the final round, finally lost with Uruguay's team against Germany in the game for third place with 0: 1 and finished fourth with the Celeste. At the tournament he stood out with good performances and was subsequently named the best full-back of the tournament. In total, he completed 20 international matches for his home country between June 8, 1969 and July 18, 1971, in which he hit the opponent's goal once.
