history
The founding of the city of Florida is very closely tied to the history of the entire country. The city was founded on April 24, 1809 . It later gained in importance when, in 1811, with the first signs of the revolution, money collection centers were set up to support Artigas and his followers, which later led to the country's independence. With the development of Florida it was necessary to cross the Santa Lucía Chico River and build a stone bridge to get south. Later, a better bridge was built in Piedra Alta .
On April 19, 1894 Florida received the status of a " Ciudad " (city).
Since 1955 the city has been the seat of the diocese of Florida . In 1988 Pope John Paul II visited the city.
Culture
La " Fiesta de San Cono " is the most important religious festival in Uruguay. It always takes place around June 3rd and attracts people from all over the province. The visitors arrive by buses and trains, which are used especially for this occasion.
traffic
The national road Ruta 5 runs through the city . Florida is also on a railway line that runs from Montevideo to Rivera (line LR), but from here only serves goods traffic.
