The Florida Cathedral or Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Lujan ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Lujan ) is a Roman Catholic church in the center of the city of Florida in Uruguay . As a cathedral, it is the seat of the diocese of Florida and also has the title of a minor basilica .

history

The church stands at one of the highest points in the city of Florida. After the laying of the foundation stone in 1887, it was built as a parish church in the neo-renaissance style with Greco-Roman elements. The towers of the two-tower facade reach a height of 60 meters, covered by domes with blue and blue tiles.

In 1956 the church became the seat of the diocese of Florida. 1963 received the cathedral from Pope Paul VI. additionally awarded the title Basilica minor . On August 25, 1975, the cathedral basilica was declared a national historical monument ( Monumento Histórico Nacional ) together with the statue of Mary on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the declaration of independence . The city of Florida was the political center of the war of liberation against Brazil in 1825. In the parish church at that time, there was a statue of the Virgin Mary, a 36 centimeter carving in American cedar from the mid-18th century, probably made by Guarani . Mass was celebrated in front of this statue during the declaration of independence on August 25th, the Te Deum was sung and the tricolor was presented. That is why people spontaneously named the small carving La Virgen de los Treinta y Tres after the group of freedom fighters The Thirty-three Orientals .

In 1857 General Manuel Oribe gave the statue a gold crown. In 1925 she received a new crown, adorned with jewels from oriental women. The alliance between the people and the Church of Uruguay with Mary, Virgen de los Treinta y Tres, was established under Pope John XXIII.
