history
The Diocese of Florida was established in 1955. The history of the diocese goes back to the Archdiocese of Montevideo , from which it emerged territorially. First it was historically built on April 14, 1879 under the name diocese of Melo. Then re-founded on August 11, 1931 with the addition of the diocese Florida-Melo. The resulting diocese of Florida-Melo was then divided on November 15, 1955, at the same time the diocese of Melo was established. On October 22, 1960, the diocese of Tacuarembó emerged from the territorial diocese of Florida . The current diocese is under canonical law of the Archdiocese of Montevideo. In the sixteen parishes of the diocese, the approximately 93,000 Roman Catholic Christians are cared for by nine diocesan priests and eighteen fathers . The pastoral service is also provided by six deacons , 46 nuns and 22 friars .
