The Archdiocese of Montevideo was established in 1830 as the Apostolic Vicariate . Today's archbishopric was elevated to a diocese on July 13, 1878. The newly founded diocese was territorially reduced in its diocese history. This led to the re-establishment of the dioceses of Melo and Salto on April 14, 1897 . At the same time, the diocese of Montevideo was elevated to an archbishopric. The diocese territory of the Archdiocese and the Diocese of Melo were last divided on November 15, 1955.
