The Diocese of Mercedes ( Latin Dioecesis Mercedaniana , Spanish Diócesis de Mercedes ) is a Roman Catholic suffragan diocese in Uruguay with its seat in the city of Mercedes . Diocesan bishop is from the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco coming Carlos María Collazzi Irazábal .
history
The establishment of the diocese of Mercedes took place from the territorial division of the Uruguayan dioceses of San José de Mayo and Salto on December 17, 1960. Its territory includes the departments of Colonia and Soriano . The diocese consists of sixteen parishes in which around 178,000 Roman Catholic Christians are looked after by sixteen diocesan priests and seven priests . Sixteen deacons in the permanent diaconate , thirty nuns and seven friars are active in the care of the parishes . It is under canonical law of the Archdiocese of Montevideo .
