Daniel Fernando Cardinal Sturla Berhouet SDB (born July 4, 1959 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is Archbishop of Montevideo .

Life

Daniel Sturla, the youngest son of a lawyer, entered 1979 in the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco and received on 21 November 1987, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then carried out various activities for his order, including that of novice master from 1994 to 1996. From 2003 to 2008 he was director of the Juan XXIII Institute . From 2007 Sturla held the position of professor of church history there. On October 28, 2008, he was called to the Provincial Order of Uruguay.

On December 10, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . the titular bishop of Phelbes and ordered him to auxiliary bishop in Montevideo. The Archbishop of Montevideo, Nicolás Cotugno Fanizzi SDB, donated him episcopal ordination on March 4, 2012 ; Co- consecrators were the auxiliary bishop in Montevideo, Milton Luis Tróccoli Cebedio , and the bishop of San José de Mayo , Arturo Fajardo .

On February 11, 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Montevideo. The enthronement Sturlas on 9 March the same year. In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis created him cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Galla . On April 13 of the same year, the Pope called Cardinal Sturla to be a member of various cardinal congregations . In the Uruguayan Bishops' Conference he heads the sub-commission for missions.

In February 2018 he declared his refusal to give communion to remarried divorced people. At the same time he said that homosexual people are also part of the church and “everyone, regardless of whether they are homosexual, heterosexual or whatever”, as members of the church “have to live their Christian life”.
