Arturo Fajardo

Arturo Eduardo Fajardo Bustamante (born July 17, 1961 in Aiguá ) is a Uruguayan clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Salto . He has been President of the Uruguayan Bishops' Conference since 2019.

Life

Arturo Fajardo studied from 1981 at the Cristo Rey interdiocesan seminary in Montevideo and was ordained a deacon on December 6, 1987. He was ordained priest on May 8, 1988 by Pope John Paul II personally. After initially working as parish priest and from 1988 to 1990 as assessor for youth pastoral care, Fajardo became spiritual of the Cristo Rey seminary in 1998 and was its rector from 2005 to 2007.

On June 27, 2007 he was received by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed Bishop of San José de Mayo . He was ordained bishop on September 8 of the same year by the Apostolic Nuncio in Uruguay, Archbishop Janusz Bolonek ; Co- consecrators were Pablo Jaime Galimberti di Vietri , Bishop of Salto, and Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira , Bishop of Minas . From May 2009 Arturo Fajardo was General Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Uruguay. From 2013 to 2016 he was Vice-President of the National Youth Pastoral Commission. He was elected Vice President of the Uruguayan Bishops' Conference for the 2016 to 2018 term.

On June 15, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Salto. The inauguration took place on August 15 of the same year.
