Aiguá is a city in Uruguay . It is also the capital of the municipality of the same name ( Municipio ).

geography

Aiguá is located in the north of the Maldonado department in the 8th Sección Censal, about 90 kilometers from the departmental capital of the same name, with which it is connected via the 39 Route. With the almost 514 meter high Cerro Catedral, the highest point in Uruguay belongs to the urban area . The distance from Aiguás to the Uruguayan capital Montevideo , to which one is connected via the Rutas 13 and 8, is 178 kilometers. The city is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The Cerro del Pororó and the Grotto of Salamanca are particularly noteworthy. The Arroyo del Aiguá also flows here .

history

Aiguá was founded in 1892 by Margarita Muniz . On May 9, 1906, the settlement was given the status of "pueblo" by law Ley 3.027 . Almost 50 years later, on January 4, 1956, the Ley 12.265 was then used to award city status (Ciudad). The name of the city comes from the Guaraní and means something like "flowing water" .

With the Liceo de Aiguá founded in 1943, Aiguá has a secondary school ( Liceo ). In 2008 the school had 251 students.
