The Salzmannbau is the listed main building of the former Jagenberg factory in Düsseldorf district of Bilk . It is an industrial monument from the turn of the century .

It was planned by the architect Heinrich Salzmann for the then paper manufacturer Jagenberg , completed between 1904 and 1906 and expanded several times by 1928. The Salzmannbau served as the company's administrative headquarters until 1984.

Above all, artists and some local politicians in Düsseldorf campaigned against the demolition and for a rescue of the Salzmann building. In September 1984 it was listed as a historical monument . In December, the Salzmannbau and the entire factory site were acquired by the city of Düsseldorf (the three factory buildings were demolished and gave way to a residential complex).

The concept of the renovation and mixed use was developed jointly by the association "Leben in der Fabrik eV", the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, its construction company LEG Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft NRW and the city of Düsseldorf. After an elaborate planning phase in cooperation with the future user groups and after several years of core renovation of the Salzmann building by the then state-owned LEG, it was ready to move into from May 1994.

In September 1994 the new Salzmannbau was officially opened with a total of 106 rental units. Since then, it has housed offices for associations, non-profit initiatives and municipal facilities of the youth welfare office and the cultural office (including the Bilk community center and the Düsseldorf art space ), apartments for students, social housing, and 36 artists' studios , 30 of which are residential studios. There was also a guest studio for foreign artists - changing scholarship holders from the city of Düsseldorf. A restaurant (Café Mautz) with a terrace serves as a meeting point for the neighborhood.

Once a year, the artists in the Salzmannbau open their studios to the public as part of the municipal art points . In the summer of 2014 an anniversary exhibition took place in the Kunstraum Düsseldorf and in the Atelier am Eck: "From here to now - 20 years of artist studios in the Salzmannbau".

The Jazz-Schmiede is located in a separate building in front of the Salzmannbau , where the Jazz in Düsseldorf eV association has been organizing concerts in the fields of contemporary jazz and world music since 1995. The 20th anniversary of Jazz in Düsseldorf eV will be celebrated in September 2015.
