history

Salzmannbau - pictorial representation of the planned factory in 1904

The factory planned and built by Heinrich Salzmann and his partner Ganzlin was inaugurated in 1906. In the course of time there were several extensions. In 1953 the plant comprised 40,000 m² of usable space. After production in a new plant in the Neuss district of Grimlinghausen on the other side of the Rhine had already started in 1971 , the last production area left the old plant in Bilk in the direction of Neuss in 1983. In 1984 the administration also moved from the main building on the site, the Salzmannbau , to the new, central building on Düsseldorf's Kennedydamm . The Salzmannbau was placed under monument protection in September .

At the same time, some architects and town planners founded a Jagenberg project group , which campaigned for the preservation and rededication of the buildings for work, cultural and residential purposes. A few months later, a citizens' initiative Uns Jagenberg was set up with the same goal. In September 1985 the association Leben in der Fabrik e. V. founded. In December, the city of Düsseldorf acquired the site after receiving a written commitment for funding from the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia .

After several years of cooperation between the association and the State Development Corporation of North Rhine-Westphalia (LEG) commissioned by the city planning office , an official LEG opening ceremony for 85 apartments and 30 artist studios took place in September 1994, ten years after the monument protection order . Another year later, in September 1995, the Alte Schmiede , which had been converted into a place for cultural events, was opened, which also belonged to the Jagenberg factory, but was not placed under monument protection. Today it is called Jazz-Schmiede .

The NKR (New Art Space) exhibition space, run by artists, is located in the Himmelgeister Strasse No. 107e wing - founded in 1994, today financed by the state capital Düsseldorf.
