The Diocese of Minas ( Latin Dioecesis Fodinensis , Spanish Diócesis de Minas ) was a Roman Catholic diocese in Uruguay with its seat in Minas .
history
The current diocese of Minas emerged from the territory of the diocese of Melo. The diocese was founded on June 25, 1960. On January 10, 1966, the present-day diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este emerged from a part of the diocese territory of Minas.
According to statistics, there are around 50,000 Roman Catholic Christians living in the Diocese of Minas . They are cared for pastorally in ten parishes by thirteen diocesan priests , a priest and a deacon in the permanent diaconate . In addition, 22 nuns and five friars help care for the Roman Catholic Christians in the Diocese of Minas . As a suffragan , the Diocese of Minas is under canon law of the Archdiocese of Montevideo .
Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira , who has been in office since 2004, asked the Holy See to resign at the end of June 2009 after reports surfaced in the media that some priests of the diocese had accused the bishop of "homosexual activities". Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation on July 1, 2009.
On March 2, 2020, Pope Francis united the Diocese of Minas with the Diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este to form the Diocese of Maldonado-Punta del Este-Minas .
