Nicolás Cotugno Fanizzi SDB (born September 21, 1938 in Sesto San Giovanni , Province of Milan , Italy ) is an Italian religious priest , missionary and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Montevideo .

Life

Cotugno Fanizzi put 1962 in the Congregation of the Salesians of Don Bosco , the profession and went in the same year as a missionary to Uruguay . After his philosophical and theological studies, he was ordained a priest in Chile on July 26, 1967 . In 1971 he returned to Uruguay.

On June 13, 1996, he was appointed Bishop of Melo by Pope John Paul II ; his episcopal ordination by the Apostolic Nuncio in Uruguay, Francesco De Nittis , took place on July 28 of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Montevideo, José Gottardi Cristelli SDB, and his predecessor in Melo, Roberto Reinaldo Cáceres González .

On December 4, 1998, he was named the sixth Archbishop of Montevideo . On October 8, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America .

On February 11, 2014, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation and appointed his Salesian brother Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet as his successor.

Positions

In November 2008, he caused a stir when, in an interview with the Uruguayan daily El Pais , he pointed out to Roman Catholic politicians who voted for the law to decriminalize abortion that this would lead to an "ipso-facto excommunication " .
