Jacinto Vera y Durán (born June 3, 1813 in Florianópolis , Santa Catarina , Brazil ; † May 6, 1881 in Pan de Azúcar , Uruguay ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Montevideo .

Life

Jacinto Vera received on 5 June 1841, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius IX appointed him on October 4, 1859 Vicar Apostolic of Montevideo. On September 22, 1864 he appointed him titular bishop of Megara . He was ordained episcopate on July 16 of the following year in Montevideo by the Bishop of Buenos Aires , Mariano José de Escalada Bustillo y Zeballos .

Jacinto Vera took part in the First Vatican Council as a council father .

Pope Leo XIII. raised the Apostolic Vicariate Montevideo on July 13, 1878 to the rank of diocese. Two days later he appointed Jacinto Vera as its first diocesan bishop .

His tomb is in the Montevideo Cathedral . The Jacinto Vera district in Montevideo is named after him. In the process of beatification initiated for him, Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on May 5, 2015 .
