Marek Epstein (born September 30, 1975 in Prague ) is a Czech screenwriter .

Life

Marek Epstein, born in 1975 in Prague , the capital of what was then Czechoslovakia , graduated as a screenwriter and dramaturge from FAMU there . Epstein wrote a variety of screenplays for television productions and films. In 2007 he published his debut novel Ohybač křížů , followed by the short story Ocucanej konec in 2014 . Occasionally, Epstein played supporting roles in series and films.

The crime film Im Schatten (original title Ve stínu ) by David Ondříček from 2012, for which Epstein wrote the script together with the director and Misha Votruba , was submitted by the Czech Film and Television Academy as the best free-language film for the Oscar . In the film set in the former Czechoslovakia, Sebastian Koch can be seen in the role of GDR major Zenke.

The historical film Charlatan by Agnieszka Holland , for which Epstein wrote the script and which is about the Czech healer Jan Mikolášek , celebrated its world premiere in February 2020 at the Berlin Film Festival .

Epstein is considered one of the most successful film and television authors in the Czech Republic and teaches at the Miroslav Ondříček Film Academy in Písek . He is also a member of the Presidium of the Czech Film Prize Český lev .
