Václav is a Czech film from 2007 . The film is inspired by the true story of an autistic person.

action

Forty-year-old Václav lives with his widowed mother in a poor Czech village. Václav's integration into the world of work failed because of his disability. He was allowed to help out with the kolkhoz and gained a certain sympathy through his talents as a marksman. Nevertheless, he is assigned the role of the village idiot, especially since he repeatedly makes himself unpopular through mishap and stubbornness.

The house where mother and son live is almost falling apart. Václav tries to make the necessary repairs, but is unable to do so. He prefers to sink into dreams and disperse with the memory of his beloved deceased father, whose past is largely unclear.

Most of the villagers as well as Václav's brother František would like to see him in a home, but the mother is strongly opposed to it. Her main focus is on her weak son and she thinks she can still handle the situation. Occasionally, she seems hopelessly overwhelmed by her task. The sensitive Václav is halfway aware of the situation: the prospect of being cast out is a specter of horror for him.

The story takes a turn when František's partner (Lída) and Václav get too close: The already jealous František is overwhelmed by anger and beats his brother. Then there is a catastrophe: Václav fires a gun at his brother in revenge. He was then sent to prison, where he was physically abused by other inmates. With some effort, the mother manages to get a handful of signatures from the villagers (especially the villagers) for a petition so that Václav can be pardoned.

Only in the end credits is it explained that the mother's plan was successful in reality: Václav's liberation is therefore not shown.

Production background and criticism

Looking back, a social cross-section of rural life between communism and market economy is presented at the time of the Czechoslovak President Havel , who had granted an amnesty indicated in this story at the beginning of the 1990s .

In this context, the work outlines the fundamental balancing act between hardness and mildness of a judgment. The actors of the two siblings, Ivan Trojan and Jan Budař , were awarded the Bohemian Lion ; for her portrayal of the mother was emília vášáryová on the Shanghai Film Festival Award in 2008 for Best Actress with the Golden Goblet Award.
