Archdiocese of Buenos Aires
The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires ( Latin : Archidioecesis Bonaërensis , Spanish : Arquidiócesis de Buenos Aires ) is an archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church based in Buenos Aires , Argentina . Since 1936 the respective archbishop of Buenos Aires has also been the primate of Argentina .
Twelve suffragan dioceses are assigned to the archbishopric , including the Maronite Eparchy of St. Scharbel of Buenos Aires of the Syrian Catholic Church and the Eparchy of Santa María del Patrocinio en Buenos Aires of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church .
history
The archbishopric was founded on April 6, 1620 as the diocese of Buenos Aires , a suffragan diocese of the then Archdiocese of Paraguay by Pope Gregory XV. founded; the first bishop was the Spanish Carmelite Pedro Carranza Salinas OCarm. With bull Pope Pius IX. from March 5, 1865 the diocese was elevated to an archbishopric; the first archbishop was the Argentine Mariano José de Escalada Bustillo y Zeballos . On March 13, 2013, the then incumbent Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis.
