Mario Aurelio Cardinal Poli (born November 29, 1947 in Buenos Aires ) is Archbishop of Buenos Aires and Primate of Argentina .

Life

Mario Aurelio Poli first studied law and social sciences, then entered the diocesan seminary in Buenos Aires (Villa Devoto) and studied philosophy and Catholic theology . He was ordained a priest on November 25, 1978 by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Juan Carlos Aramburu . During his theological doctoral studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina “Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires” (UCA) he was parish vicar of San Cayetano (1978–1980). He was active at the Diocesan Seminary Villa Devoto (1980–1987) and chaplain of the Servants of the Holy Spirit of Eternal Adoration (1988–1991). In 1991 he became director of the Instituto Vocacional San José and professor of church history at the UCA Theological Faculty.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Abidda and auxiliary bishop in Buenos Aires on February 8, 2002 . The Archbishop of Buenos Aires , Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio SJ , donated him episcopal ordination on April 20th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Juan Carlos Cardinal Aramburu , Archbishop Emeritus of Buenos Aires, and Auxiliary Bishops Mario José Serra , Joaquín Mariano Sucunza and Guillermo Rodríguez Melgarejo .

On June 24, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Santa Rosa . In the Argentine Bishops' Conference he was a member of the Education Commission and is President of the Episcopal Commission for Catechesis and Bible Pastoral Care.

Pope Francis appointed him as his successor as Archbishop of Buenos Aires on March 28, 2013. Poli was introduced to the post on April 20 of the same year. In addition, he took over the office of full professor for Catholics of oriental rites in Argentina, which today's Pope Francis has held since 1998. Poli adopted the bishop's motto “Concédeme Señor un corazón que escuche” (German: “Give me, Lord, a hearing heart”) (according to 1 Kings 3,9  EU ).

In the consistory of February 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Roberto Bellarmino in the college of cardinals .

In April 2015 it became known that Poli had applied for state registration in Argentina as a Catholic order for the Pius Brotherhood .
