history

The first immigrants from Ukraine came to Argentina in 1880; they were members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and founded a mission station in Buenos Aires in 1897 . In 1908 the first religious priests of the Byzantine rite came to Argentina; the majority were members of the Basilians of St. Josaphat .

Formation of the communities

Between 1924 and 1945, many members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church fled to Argentina and settled in the provinces of Mendoza , Chaco , Formosa , Corrientes , Córdoba , Santa Fe and the Argentine capital. Since 1936 the religious and diocesan priests have been working together successfully and looking after the Ukrainian believers.

Pope Pius XI appointed the Bishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Constantine Bohacewskyi of Philadelphia ( USA ) as Apostolic Visitator for Argentina. In 1961 Pope John XXIII appointed the Salesian Father Andrés Sapelak , after receiving his episcopal ordination in Rome , as the new Apostolic Visitator for Argentina.

Establishment of the eparchy

Pope Paul VI finally founded the Apostolic Exarchate Argentina on April 9, 1968 for all Catholics of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church living in Argentina . He appointed Andrés Sapelak as the first Apostolic Exarch. With the Apostolic Constitution Cum praeterito, the exarchate was elevated to an eparchy on April 24, 1978 and received its current name. The Salesians , Franciscans , Basilians , the Servants of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and the Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus work in the field of the eparchy in various institutions and bodies .
