Sons of Divine Providence

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sons of Divine Providence ( Latin : Filii Divinae Providentiae , order abbreviation : FDP ; also Orionites ) are a religious community according to the provisions of the Institutes of Consecrated Life . This congregation is a Roman Catholic male order , which received papal approbation in 1903 , its foundation goes back to Saint Luigi Orione (1872-1940).

history

The Italian priest Luigi Orione was initially a student of Don Bosco and opened the first community and a church youth center in 1892 at the age of 20. In 1893 he founded a boarding school for poor and destitute school children. He called his work "Work of Divine Providence" ( Italian : Opera della Divina Provvidenza ), and soon he had many followers. With the canonical approbation of March 21, 1903, the Bishop of Tortona confirmed the foundation of the male order "Sons of Divine Providence" (Italian: Figli della Divina Provvidenza ). It included priests , hermit brothers, and coadjutors . Then the female congregation “ Little Missionaries of Love ” (Italian: Piccole Soure Missionarie della Carita ) developed. From this in turn two contemplative branches emerged, the “Sacramentine adoratrici non vedenti” and the “Contemplative di Gesù Crocifisso”, in the further development the secular institute “Don Orione” and the lay movement of the same name were founded. The guiding principle is derived from the motto "Renew everything in Christ" (Latin: Omnia instaurare in Christ) and is anchored in the order's coat of arms .

The development

During Don Orione's lifetime, his work spread across Europe ( Poland 1924), South America ( Brazil 1913) and North America ( USA 1934). The religious families, which today are grouped under the name “Little Work of Divine Providence”, work mainly as helpers for the elderly, the sick and those in need, especially among the youth. After the strong and violent earthquakes in Messina (1908) and Marsica (1915), they were particularly effective in the areas destroyed by the earthquake. During the First World War , they took on the care and care of war orphans. At the end of his creative power, Don Orione's work had 820 members, 220 of whom were priests. His work also spread to Poland, Brazil and the USA, the congregation is supported by the "Friends of Don Orione" (Italian: Amici di Don Orione ).

Current situation

The “work” has branches in over thirty countries, the order of the Sons of Divine Providence has 1,100 members, the Little Missionary Sisters of Love have 900 members, and Don Orione's secular institute has 170 members. Then there are the volunteers and the lay movement. Most recently, facilities at the plant were opened on the outskirts of Manila (2001) and Mexico City (2003). Further branches were established in Bucharest (2004) and Fortaleza (2005). In recent years new areas of missionary activity have also been opened: in Maputo ( Mozambique ) the plant runs a center for children who have been mutilated by mines; and in Porto Velho (Amazon region, Brazil), Baga ( Togo ) and Antsofinondry ( Madagascar ), adult education centers were opened. New branches in Eastern Europe were opened in Lviv ( Ukraine ) and Lahishyn ( Belarus ), a home for poor and single people and a place of pilgrimage . In Italy , the plant tries above all to bring its own facilities up to date and to adapt them to today's requirements.
