Tortona (in the local dialect Turtona ) is a town with 27,248 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the province of Alessandria , Piedmont region in Italy on the right bank of the Scrivia River .
geography
Tortona lies at an altitude of 122 m above sea level. NN and has an area of 99.29 km² 26,678 inhabitants (as of October 31, 2005). The city also includes the independent settlements of Bettole, Castellar Ponzano, Mombisaggio, Torre Calderai, Passalacqua, Rivalta Scrivia, Torre Garofoli and Vho.
The city is the gateway to the Curone, Grue, Ossona and Borbera valleys. The neighboring municipalities are Alessandria , Bosco Marengo , Carbonara Scrivia , Carezzano , Castelnuovo Scrivia , Paderna , Pontecurone , Pozzolo Formigaro , Sale , Sarezzano , Spineto Scrivia , Viguzzolo , Villalvernia , Villaromagnano .
history
The city is of pre-Romanesque origin and is located in the middle of wine-growing areas (see also the article Colli Tortonesi ). In 120 BC Tortona was founded under the name Colonia Iulia Dertona and was an important military base on the Via Postumia .
Tortona's diocese is one of the oldest in the world. According to tradition, the first bishop was St. Marziano, who, according to various sources, was crucified as a Christian martyr in 117 under Trajan or 120 under Hadrian . Even if the historical information about St. Marziano is insufficient and fragmentary, a Christian community certainly existed as early as the 2nd century.
Today Tortona is an industrial and commercial city, a traffic junction that includes a scientific and technological park and the Rivalta Scrivia interim container storage facility.
Attractions
Buildings of interest to tourists are: the church of Santa Maria Canale from the 11th century, the cathedral from the 16th century, and the bishop's palace, the theater (1842), the church of San Giacomo from the 17th century, the Capuchin Church, the tower of the Castle, Via Emilia and the old city center with the Palazzo Guidobono. South of Tortona is the 1180 built Cistercian - Kloster Rivalta Scrivia .
Town twinning
City partners are Privas in France and Jiangyin in China . The town twinning with Weilburg , Germany was ended in August 2008, the one with Zevenaar in the Netherlands had already ended.

After the city is wine-growing region of Tortonesi named. The geological stage of the Tortonian ( Miocene , Neogene ) was named after the city of Tortona.
