Ricaldone ( Piedmontese Ricaldòn ) is a municipality with 640 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the Italian province of Alessandria , Piedmont region .

The place is about 27 km from Alessandria at an altitude of 285 m above sea level. The area of the municipality covers 10.61 km² . The patron saints of the place are Saints Simone and Giuda . The neighboring municipalities are Acqui Terme , Alice Bel Colle , Cassine , Maranzana , Mombaruzzo , Quaranti and Strevi .

history

Ricaldone's roots go back to the Middle Ages . The name of the place comes from the combination of the words Runcus and Aldonis (the genitive form of Aldo ). Runcus stands for the work of cultivating a thorny area and Aldo is a Longobard name that first appeared in Italy in the 7th century. The place is therefore a settlement of the Longobards who invaded this area around the year 642.

Culinary specialties

In Ricaldone, vines are grown for the Dolcetto d'Acqui , a red wine with DOC status. The berries of the Pinot Noir and / or Chardonnay grape varieties can be used to make Alta Langa sparkling wine . The Muscat grape for the Asti Spumante , a sweet DOCG sparkling wine with a low alcohol content, and for the still wine Moscato d'Asti is also grown here. The lovely sparkling wine Brachetto d'Acqui is made from the Brachetto grape variety . In Ricaldone, vines of the Barbera variety are also grown for the Barbera d'Asti , a red wine with DOCG status, and the Barbera del Monferrato .
