Paolo Cardinal Sardi (born September 1, 1934 in Ricaldone , Alessandria Province , Italy , † July 13, 2019 in Rome ) was a Cardinal Curia of the Roman Catholic Church and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy Sardi received on 29 June 1958 under Giuseppe Dell'Omo in Acqui the sacrament of Holy Orders for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Acqui . After graduating , he obtained his doctorate in canonical and general law at the Catholic University of Sacro Cuore in Milan . This was followed by a teaching position in moral theology at the University of Turin until 1976 . He then entered the diplomatic service and was appointed to the State Secretariat , where he coordinated the office responsible for processing the Pope's texts and speeches. Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on June 30, 1978 the title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ); on December 24, 1987, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness . In 1992 he was appointed Vice Assessor, and in 1997 Assessor of the General Affairs Section of the Vatican State Secretariat.

On December 10, 1996 by Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Sutrium and ex officio appointed by the State Secretariat as nuncio for special tasks, he donated on January 6, 1997, the Pope , the episcopal ordination . Sardi was Honorary and Devotion Grand Cross Bailli of the Order of Malta . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on June 6, 2009 to succeed Cardinal Pio Laghi as Pro-Patron of the Order of Malta. Its cardinal patron was Sardi from November 30, 2010 to November 8, 2014.
