Ponzone ( Piedmontese Punson or Ponson ) is an Italian commune with 1012 (as of December 31, 2019) inhabitants in the province of Alessandria , Piedmont region . Located in the high Montferrat , the region is dominated by agriculture, but is also used by many residents of the nearby cities for summer vacation.

The neighboring municipalities are Cartosio , Cassinelle , Cavatore , Grognardo , Malvicino , Molare , Morbello , Pareto , Sassello ( SV ), Tiglieto ( GE ) and Urbe ( SV ). The patron saint of the place is San Giustino .

geography

The place is at an altitude of 629 m above sea level on a mountain ridge oriented in north-south direction, between the river valleys of the Erro in the west and the Visone in the east. The area of ​​the municipality borders in the southeast on the province of Savona and covers an area of ​​69.42 km² .

In the municipality's territory, the villages of Ciglione and Caldasio are to the north and east of the center in the Visone valley. Toleto (653 m), Cimaferle (693 m), as well as Moretti and Piancastagna in the southeast. In the south, Pianlago is on a hillside on the right side of the Erro valley.

history

Finds from Roman times , especially ceramics and coins, testify to the origins of the place. It is mentioned for the first time in a document from the 10th century. Until 1167 it was under the rule of the Princes of Montferrat and became the center of the region.

After some time under the administration of the Bishops of Acqui , the entire region became part of the Kingdom of Genoa in 1334 . In 1646 the place fell to the Spaniards, who destroyed the castle and the city wall. Finally, like all of Piedmont, the area became part of Savoy .
