Walter Gassire (born August 21, 1946 in Florida ), also known by the nickname El Flaco ( Spanish for The Thin ), is a former Uruguayan football player on the position of goalkeeper .

Life

Gassire began in his childhood, first as a field player on the position of the striker before he decided on the post between the posts. At the age of 15 he left his home club and joined the youth division of the top club Peñarol .

He signed his first professional contract in 1963 with the Montevideo Wanderers , for whom he worked for the next two years, before he was under contract with Club Atlético Defensor for the next six seasons .

In the early 1970s he moved to the Mexican Primera División for Deportivo Toluca FC , with whom he won the championship title in the 1974/75 season .

In 1980 Gassire was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was successfully removed. In the following three seasons he was under contract for one season each with Atletas Campesinos , Atlético Español and most recently Tampico-Madero , where he let his active career end in the 1982/83 season.

After finishing his active career, Gassire stayed in Mexico , where he married a Mexican and settled in Toluca , his adopted home of many years . He opened a sports shop in the immediate vicinity of the Toluca stadium .

He also worked occasionally as an assistant coach under his former teammates Roberto Matosas and Héctor Hugo Eugui , with whom he won the championship title in 1974/75; for the first time in 1986 under Matosas at Toluca and between 2008 and 2011 under Eugui at CF Indios , Puebla FC and most recently again at Toluca.
