The Estadio Nemesio Díez is a football stadium in Toluca , the capital of the state of Mexico . It is owned by the Mexican first division club Deportivo Toluca , which plays its home games here. In contrast to many other stadiums in Mexico, which are more on the outskirts, the Estadio Nemesio Díez is located in the city center. Furthermore, the proximity of the stands to the field gives an “English flair”.

history

The stadium has had different names throughout history: Héctor Barraza , Luis Gutiérrez Dosal , La Bombonera and now Nemesio Díez Riega .

In its early days, the soccer team of the Deportivo Toluca club, founded in 1917, played on a site called Presa de Gachupines , which the club had acquired in 1919. Later some games were played on the Tívoli ; a square just a few blocks from today's stadium.

In 1953 the board of directors of Club Toluca bought the Patria sports field and in the same year began to expand and modernize the existing stands. After completion and official inauguration on August 8, 1954, the club finally had its own stadium. It was initially named after Héctor Barraza and later after the club president of Deportivo Toluca, under whose direction the stadium was built and inaugurated: Luis Gutiérrez Dosal.

On Sunday February 19, 1967, Deportivo Toluca won their first championship in this stadium by beating Necaxa 2-0 .

Football World Cup

The stadium was the site of the football world championships in 1970 and 1986 , which were held in Mexico.

In 1970 , a total of four games took place at the Estadio Luis Gutiérrez Dosal , as it was called at the time. First all three group B preliminary round matches without the participation of the Uruguayan national team, which played their games at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla : on June 3, the match between Italy and Sweden (1-0), on June 7, the match between Sweden and Israel ( 1: 1) and on June 11, the last group match between Italy and Israel (0: 0). The quarter-final match between hosts Mexico and Italy, the winners of Group B, also took place here on June 14th. To the chagrin of most of the spectators, Mexico lost 4-1 to the eventual runner-up despite a 1-0 lead.

In 1986, the La Bombonera stadium (the box of chocolates), as it was called at the time, hosted three group B preliminary round matches: on June 4th Paraguay against Iraq (1-0), on June 8th Belgium against Iraq (2: 1) and on June 11th Belgium against Paraguay (2-2). Incidentally, the fourth team in the group was host Mexico, but their preliminary round matches were all played in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City .
