Rivera is a city in northern Uruguay .
geography
Rivera is the capital of the Rivera department of the same name and is located about 400 km (as the crow flies) north of the capital Montevideo . It is the border town between Brazil and Uruguay. Across the border is Santana do Livramento in the state of Rio Grande do Sul . Rivera lies at the foot of the Coxhilia de Santana mountain range .

history
Rivera was officially founded on July 20, 1867. It is considered the original home or stronghold of the Portuguese-Spanish mixed language Portuñol .
Residents
Rivera has 64,485 inhabitants (as of 2011), of which 30,383 male and 34,102 female, with the sister city Santana do Livramento approx. 200,000 in total.

The Plaza Internacional , inaugurated in February 1943, is one of the focal points of the city. It lies on both Uruguayan and Brazilian territory and forms an open border between Rivera and Santana do Livramento in Brazil. The road connecting the two cities is called Avenida Sarandí . In this shopping street there are shops in various areas and also the so-called free shops . A change to the Brazilian city is possible without identification.
