Ronald Federico Araújo da Silva (born March 7, 1999 in Rivera ) is a Uruguayan football player who has been under contract with FC Barcelona since the end of August 2018 .

Career

In the club

Beginnings in Uruguay

Araújo began playing football in his native Rivera near Huracán de Rivera and later joined the youth team of CA Rentistas from Montevideo . In September 2016, the 17-year-old central defender made his debut for the professional team in the Segunda División . By the end of the 2016 season, Araújo appeared in 2 other games in which he scored a goal. In the 2017 season he established himself as a regular player and was used in 14 league games until July, always in the starting line-up, in which he scored 6 goals.

At the end of July 2017, Araújo moved within Montevideo to the first division club Boston River . By the end of the 2017 season , he was used in 9 league games (4 times in the starting XI). In the 2018 season, Araújo prevailed as a regular player and made 18 appearances (all of them in the starting XI).

FC Barcelona

At the end of August 2018, Araújo moved to the second team of FC Barcelona for a transfer fee of 1.7 million euros, which can increase to 5.2 million euros . He signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2023, which includes an exit clause of 100 million euros. This doubles when Araújo is permanently accepted into the first team. From the end of October he established himself as a regular player and by the end of the 2018/19 season had 22 appearances (all from the beginning) in the third-rate Segunda División B , in which he scored 3 goals.

Due to the failures of the central defenders Clément Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti , Araújo was appointed to the professional squad by head coach Ernesto Valverde for the league game against Sevilla FC on October 6, 2019 . After Jean-Clair Todibo was injured during the 4-0 win , he was substituted on in the 73rd minute and made his debut in the Primera División . In the 87th minute of the game, however, Araújo received the red card due to an emergency brake .

In the national team

Araújo first appeared in the Uruguayan U20 national team in March 2019 . With her he took part in the 2019 U20 World Cup in Poland . In the tournament, Araújo was used in 3 games (all in the starting XI) and scored one goal. In total he was used 5 times in the U20 (2 goals).
