Frenkie de Jong (born May 12, 1997 in Gorinchem ) is a Dutch football player who has been under contract as a midfielder with FC Barcelona since July 2019 .

De Jong previously played with Willem II Tilburg , Jong Ajax and Ajax Amsterdam in his native Netherlands. With Ajax Amsterdam he won the Dutch Championship ( 2018/19 ) and the Dutch Cup ( 2018/19 ). With the Dutch national team , he finished second in the UEFA Nations League ( 2018/19 ).

Club career

Beginnings (2005 to 2015)

In 2005 de Jong moved from ASV Arkel to Willem II Tilburg . He also ran for the teams of the joint youth academy of Willem II Tilburg and RKC Waalwijk . On August 1, 2013, he signed his first professional contract, which was dated until the summer of 2016. During the winter break of the 2014/15 season, de Jong took part in the training camp of the professional team in Turkey while still playing on the reserve team. He made his professional debut on May 10, 2015 in the Eredivisie in a 1-0 win over ADO Den Haag , when he came on for Terell Ondaan after an hour . In the professional team, de Jong received little match practice and the algemeen directeurs Berry van Gool regretted that his coach never gave him a chance. In the summer of 2015, PSV Eindhoven expressed their interest in de Jong.

Ajax Amsterdam (2016 to 2019)

However, Frenkie de Jong moved to Ajax Amsterdam , where he signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2019 on August 25, 2015. The decisive factor was a conversation with Marc Overmars , Dennis Bergkamp and Orlando Trustfull. The Amsterdamers paid one euro for de Jong, but Willem II Tilburg is involved in the resale with a considerable sum. Frenkie de Jong was loaned to Willem II Tilburg for the 2015/16 season, where he was hardly used because his game, which was considered frivolous, was considered too risky for the situation of the club, which was in relegation battle. Since he did not play in Tilburg, the loan contract was terminated and de Jong ran for the reserve team at Ajax Amsterdam. On January 25, 2016, he scored his first goal in professional football by scoring 2-0 in a game against NAC Breda in Almere . In his first season he came to fifteen games for Jong Ajax, in which he scored twice.

Peter Bosz , who was appointed the successor to head coach Frank de Boer in the professional team in May 2016 , nominated de Jong for the preparation for the 2016/17 season and also took him to the training camp in Austria . In a friendly against FC Liefering , he made his unofficial debut for the professional team at the end of this training camp. After the preparation, de Jong ran for the reserve team. On September 21, 2016 he was nominated by Bosz for the game in KNVB-Beker against Willem II Tilburg. In this game he also made his debut for the professional team in a competitive game when he came on in the 80th minute when the score was 3-0. On February 12, 2017, he came on as a substitute for Lasse Schöne in the 88th minute in a 2-0 home win against Sparta Rotterdam . On May 7, 2017, he scored his first Eredivisie goal in a 4-0 win against Go Ahead Eagles Deventer . On the last day of the match, de Jong started the game against Willem II Tilburg. This season he played in just four games, as coach Bosz did not believe that he would play well in situations after losing the ball. At the end of the season, de Jong received the Eredivisie's Greatest Talent Award. He also reached the final of the UEFA Europa League with Ajax , where he was substituted on in the final - one of four appearances.

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, de Jong received a regular seat under the new head coach Marcel Keizer , who replaced Bosz who had migrated to Borussia Dortmund , but was later put back on the bench. On November 26, 2017, he gave three assists in a 5-1 home win against Roda JC Kerkrade . In December Keizer used him alongside Matthijs de Ligt as a defender. This was seen as a success. On December 22, 2017, he extended his contract until 2022. In 2018, Keizer was replaced by Erik ten Hag . Frenkie de Jong himself emphasized that he wanted to play in midfield. On February 28, he suffered an ankle injury and fell for the remainder of the season.

In the 2018/19 season he mostly played as one of the two controlling midfielders alongside Lasse Schöne. He was also courted by foreign clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain , FC Barcelona and Manchester City . He made his UEFA Champions League debut in 2018 . In December he was appointed to the 2018 Champions League breakthrough team by UEFA . De Jong also reached 92nd place in the list of the British newspaper The Guardian in the selection of the 100 best footballers in the world .

FC Barcelona (since 2019)

For the 2019/20 season, de Jong moved to the Spanish Primera División for FC Barcelona. He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2024 and, with a transfer fee of 75 million euros (plus 11 million euros in bonus payments), became one of the most expensive transfers in football history.

De Jong made his debut for FC Barcelona on August 16, 2019 on the first matchday of the 2019/20 season in the 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao . His first goal he scored on 14 September 2019 at 5: 2 victory against FC Valencia .

National team career

De Jong has been playing for Dutch youth national teams since 2012. He made his debut for the Dutch senior team on September 6, 2018, when he was substituted on in the friendly against Peru at the start of the second half in Amsterdam .
