Héctor Júnior Firpo Adamés (born August 22, 1996 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a Spanish- Dominican football player . The left-back has been playing for Spanish first division club FC Barcelona since 2019 and is a former Spanish U21 international .

Career

In the club

Born in the Dominican capital Santo Domingo , Firpo moved to Benalmádena in the province of Málaga in the Spanish community of Andalusia at the age of six . In 2014 he joined the youth team at Betis Sevilla , having previously played in youth teams for amateur clubs. In July 2015 he was promoted to the reserve team, which in the third-tier Segunda División B played. In his first season 2015/16 he already played regularly and at the end of the season with the B-Elf had to accept relegation to the fourth-rate Tercera División . On August 1, 2017, Junior extended his contract with the Béticos until 2021. On February 12, 2018, he made his debut with the professional team when he was allowed to start in the 1-0 away win against Deportivo La Coruña . Firpo became the first player born in the Dominican Republic who was used in the Primera División . He scored his first goal for Betis on March 17, 2018 in a 3-0 home win over Espanyol Barcelona . In his first 2017/18 season , he made 14 appearances in which he scored two goals and prepared two more.

On August 19, 2018, he was finally promoted to the pros and signed a contract extension until 2023, which included an exit clause of 50 million euros. In the 2018/19 season he became the undisputed regular player in defense. He played 24 league games (22 times from the start) in which he scored 3 goals. He was also used 4 times in the Europa League .

For the 2019/20 season, Firpo moved to FC Barcelona for a transfer fee of 18 million euros, which can be increased by 12 million euros through bonus payments . He signed a contract that runs until June 30, 2024, which includes an exit clause of 200 million euros. Firpo made his debut in the Blaugrana shirt on August 25, 2019 when he came on as a substitute for Rafinha in the closing stages of the 5-2 win against his former employer Betis Sevilla . On September 28 (7th matchday) he scored his first goal for his new club in a 2-0 away win against Getafe FC . He played 17 league games in the 2019/20 season.

National team

Firpo played for the first time in September 2018 as part of the qualification for the U21 European Championship 2019 for the Spanish U21 national team . At the finals in Italy and San Marino , he played in a group game, in the semifinals and in the final for the full season and was after a 2-1 victory over the German U21 European champion . After the tournament, Firpo passed the age limit after four appearances for the U21s.
